A 26-year-old Inglewood man was detained after he threatened to jump off a freeway overpass in Pomona, police said Wednesday.
The man appeared to be under the influence of drugs and suffering from a mental health crisis when officers arrived at the Dudley Street overpass at the San Bernardino (10) Freeway about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to Sgt. V. Terrell of the Pomona Police Department.
The man was about 40 feet above the freeway and was threatening to jump, Terrell said.
Officers were able to keep the man calm for more than two hours, even providing him with a cigarette, but when talks stalled, Pomona police and California Highway Patrol officers, along with the Los Angeles County Fire Department moved in and rescued the man, Terrell said.
The man, identified as Luis Norez, was detained and will receive help from a mental health specialist, Terrell said.
No injuries were reported.
