A noon rally was held at Los Angeles City Hall Monday as part of a nationwide set of demonstrations against President Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency that allows him to shift funding away from congressional-approved national security initiatives and toward completion of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Los Angeles, was among the speakers.

The demonstrations, organized by MoveOn.org and held in conjunction with the Presidents Day holiday, were to consist of 260 gatherings of activists in 47 states “to protest Donald Trump’s illegal fake emergency and his racist border wall,” organizers said.

Trump made the declaration Friday during a news conference in the White House Rose Garden after threatening to do so for weeks to stop “an invasion of our country with drugs, with human traffickers, with all types of criminals and gangs.”
