Felony charges are expected to be filed Tuesday against a parolee suspected of setting a 52-year-old man ablaze at a house in Moreno Valley house, inflicting grave injuries.
Richard Hampton, 35, was arrested Friday morning on suspicion of attempted murder, arson causing great bodily injury and parole violations. He’s being held without bail at the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside.
According to Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Jaime Hernandez, the attack happened about 7 a.m. at a residence in the 14600 block of Muirfield Street in a gated community just off of Moreno Beach Drive. Deputies were called to investigate an assault and found the victim, whose identity was not released, suffering from extensive life-threatening burns.
Hernandez alleged that during a confrontation, Hampton “doused (the man) with gasoline and lit (him) on fire.” No motive was disclosed.
The victim was transported to a regional burn center in critical condition amid concerns that he may not survive.
Hampton left the Muirfield property before deputies arrived but was located nearby and taken into custody without incident shortly before 8 a.m. Friday, according to Hernandez.
Jail records show he is on parole, but his convictions were in another jurisdiction and are not listed.
