Authorities Wednesday appealed for public help in identifying a girl between about 7 and 10 years old whose body was found near a hiking trail in the Hacienda Heights area.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva and homicide detectives planned an afternoon news conference at the downtown Los Angeles Hall of Justice to release a composite sketch of the girl, along with photographs of her clothing, the sheriff’s department reported.

County Parks and Recreation staff discovered the body about 10:35 a.m. Tuesday south of Hacienda Boulevard and Glenmark Drive. Information was not immediately released on a possible cause of death.

The girl appeared to have been dumped at the site from the roadway above, sheriff’s Lt. Scott Hoglund said. Investigators believe the remains were left at that location within 24 hours of being found.

Deputy Trina Schrader said Tuesday that she could not immediately confirm reports that the body was found inside a suitcase, but did say that some luggage was found in the area.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500, or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
