A collision involving an SUV and a car on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway in West Covina left a man dead and a possible drunk driver seriously injured, authorities said Monday.

The crash occurred about 9:50 p.m. Sunday on the westbound 10 Freeway west of Barranca Street, the California Highway Patrol reported.

An 89-year-old La Puente man died at the scene, the CHP reported. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.

The victim was riding in a 1998 Ford Explorer driven by Gerardo Alvarez, 57, also of La Puente, the CHP said.

Alvarez allegedly was driving the Ford “at an unsafe speed for changing traffic conditions” when it crashed into the rear of a 2002 Nissan Altima, the CHP said in a statement.

The Ford overturned and ended up on its roof. The driver of the Nissan suffered moderate injuries.

Alvarez was hospitalized in serious condition with a head injury, and was placed under arrest, the CHP reported.

“Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in this collision,” the CHP said.

Two lanes were closed for about three hours while an investigation was conducted.
