A busy intersection was shut down Monday after a woman crashed a car into a utility pole, compromising the pole and causing at least one power line to fall to the ground, authorities said.

The crash was at 3:10 a.m. at Batavia Street and Katella Avenue, Orange police Sgt. Trevor Cullen said.

The woman was taken to a hospital for evaluation of injuries, Cullen said. She got out of the car after the crash and the crash investigation centered upon whether she was driving drunk, he said.

Police assumed the downed power line was live and shut down the intersection to await a crew from SoCal Edison to deactivate it and shore up the compromised pole, Cullen said.

Police hoped to reopen the intersection to traffic before the morning rush, he said.
