Authorities Thursday identified a San Bernardino County resident being sought as a suspect in the killing of an acquaintance at a Bellflower house party.
Marco Anthony Garay, 30, of Hesperia was named as a suspect in the killing of Oscar Ruiz, 25, of Compton, who was gunned down about 12:30 a.m. Jan. 20 in the 17100 block of Downey Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Detectives said Ruiz went to pick up his girlfriend from a house party at the location, where a crowd had gathered, and found himself in the midst of some sort of dispute.
“When Oscar arrived, he was truly an innocent victim in this case,” sheriff’s Lt. Charles Calderaro said at a news conference Thursday morning. “He tried to defuse the situation; he said, `hey, we don’t want any problems; all I want to do is go home.’ And at that point … the suspect began firing at him.”
Detectives said the victim and suspect knew each other, but were not friends.
A $10,000 reward was previously offered by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for information that helps solve the crime.
Sheriff’s homicide detectives asked anyone with any information regarding the shooting to call them at (323) 890-5500.
