Two men, one a suspected gang member, were jailed Saturday morning in Pomona on suspicion of weapons violations.
Members of the Pomona Police Department’s Major Crimes Task Force and California Highway Patrol officers were conducting a gang suppression operation in the 1000 block of East Pasadena Street at 11:45 p.m. Friday, when they spotted a suspect, believed to be serving as a lookout for gang members in the area, according to PPD Cpl. J. Hernandez.
The suspect, identified as Kevin Barahona, 23, a known gang member from La Puente, was caught by surprise and in full view of officers reached into his waistband and discarded a loaded firearm over a fence, Hernandez said.
The gun was recovered and Barahona was taken into custody, he said.
During the investigation, officers found a loaded rifle magazine and also arrested Fernando Mendez, 22, of Hemet.
Both men were booked into the Pomona city jail.
