Officers responding to a report of gunshots in Harbor City shot and wounded the suspected shooter, authorities said Tuesday.

It happened at 9:23 p.m. Monday, Los Angeles Police Department officials said. The shots were heard in the area of 254th Street and Marigold Avenue.

Harbor Division gang officers spotted a male armed with a rifle walking on 253rd Street approaching Petroleum Avenue, officials said. The officers ordered the suspect to drop the rifle and an officer-involved shooting occurred, police said.

The suspect fled on foot but was quickly captured by patrol officers, officials said.

The suspect was struck by the gunfire and taken by paramedics to a hospital for treatment, the officials said. His condition was not known.

No officers were injured and a rifle was recovered, they said.
