A man was charged Friday with hitting a 75-year-old man with an electric scooter last week in downtown Los Angeles.

Janai Washington, 41, who is homeless, is charged with one felony count of elder or dependent adult abuse with an allegation that he used a deadly and dangerous weapon and one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

The charges include allegations of inflicting great bodily injury on an elderly and vulnerable victim.

On June 13, Washington allegedly approached Jose Cancel, who was sitting in a chair at Sixth and Spring streets, and threw an electric scooter at him, hitting him in the head. The defendant is accused of then throwing the e-scooter again at the victim while he was on the ground, further injuring him.

A bystander intervened and the defendant fled. Washington was later identified by police and arrested Wednesday.

Washington — who is set to be arraigned Monday — faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years in state prison if convicted as charged, according to prosecutors.
