A probationer who sexually assaulted a Temecula girl near a park was sentenced Friday to three years in state prison.
Miguel Esteban Cruz, 27, pleaded guilty last month to lewd acts on a child under 14 years old and resisting arrest.
Riverside County Superior Court Judge Stephen Gallon certified the terms of the plea agreement and imposed the sentence stipulated by the prosecution and defense. In addition to the prison time, Gallon ordered Cruz to register as a convicted sex offender for life under Penal Code section 290, limiting where the defendant can work when he’s paroled, and requiring him to keep law enforcement informed as to his whereabouts.
According to sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Menchaca, about 9:30 a.m. last Dec. 27, deputies were called to the area of Vail Ranch Park, near Harmony Lane and Vail Ranch Parkway, to investigate reports of a sexual battery, the exact details of which were not disclosed.
Menchaca said that the victim, identified in court documents only as Jane Doe, told authorities she had been assaulted by a man and provided deputies with a detailed description.
During a search of the area, Cruz was found and forcibly detained when he tried to flee.
Menchaca said that the convicted felon was positively identified as the perpetrator and taken to jail.
According to court records, the defendant had prior convictions for sodomy of a minor and receiving stolen property.
