A 17-year-old girl was fatally shot killed in a shooting involving a Fullerton police officer on the eastbound Riverside (91) Freeway in Anaheim, police said Saturday.

The shooting victim was a resident of Anaheim, the Anaheim Police Department reported. Her name was not immediately released.

Investigators reported that “an item appearing to be a handgun was recovered at the scene.”

It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting, which occurred shortly after 7 p.m. Friday on the freeway near the Kraemer Boulevard exit and prompted the closure of the eastbound lanes of the freeway.

Fullerton police confirmed that one of their officers was “involved in an on-duty officer-involved shooting” on the freeway. Fullerton police officials referred all inquiries to the Anaheim Police Department, which is handling the investigation.

Anaheim police detectives and Orange County District Attorney’s Office investigators worked to determine the circumstances of the shooting, police said.

The Anaheim Police Department tweeted Saturday afternoon: “We cannot release details that might interfere with obtaining unbiased statements from witnesses. The freeway was packed. You can help by asking anyone who witnessed the incident to call @occrimestoppers 855-TIP-OCCS.”
