The California Highway Patrol asked Wednesday for the public’s help in locating the driver and vehicle responsible for a hit-and-run crash in the Vermont Vista area of South Los Angeles that killed a woman walking inside a crosswalk.

The crash occurred about 11 p.m. Tuesday at 98th Street and South Vermont Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol, which investigates incidents in unincorporated parts of South Los Angeles.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name was withheld pending notification of family members.

Surveillance video from the location showed the woman getting off a bus, then walking across the street in the marked crosswalk when a vehicle approached from her left. She attempted to get out of the way, but was struck by the vehicle, whose driver fled the scene.

The vehicle is possibly a white Mercedes-Benz CLK coupe with a broken right-side mirror and possible damage along the right side of the vehicle, CHP investigators said.

Anyone with information was asked to call Officers Parilla or Perreira at 310-642-3939, and reference CHP case number 9565-2019-3949. Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 (TIPS).
