Two California Highway Patrol officers and a motorist sustained moderate to major injuries in a four-vehicle crash on the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway in Fountain Valley that involved an accused impaired driver.
One of the CHP officers was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center with “major” injuries and the other was listed as suffering “moderate” injuries, according to a CHP news release.
Another motorist, identified as J. Drilling, 39, of Fountain Valley, sustained major injuries, the CHP said.
The crash happened about 2:50 a.m. just south of Bushard Street.
The freeway was reduced to the two right lanes at the time for construction.
G. Ghimenti, 19, of Costa Mesa, was driving a 2013 Chrysler at a high rate of speed when he slammed the car into a 2008 Peterbilt and Drilling’s Toyota.
The force of the collision pushed the Toyota into the closed part of the freeway where it plowed into the rear of a CHP car idling with its emergency lights on, authorities said.
Ghimenti was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, the CHP said.
Anyone who might have seen the crash was asked to call the CHP at 714-892-4426.
