Police thwarted an armored car robbery outside a bank Sunday in South Gate and later arrested two of the three would-be robbers, according to authorities and broadcast reports.

The attempted robbery occurred about 8:20 a.m. outside a Bank of America branch at 4400 Tweedy Blvd., according to South Gate police.

Officers responded to a robbery-in-progress call, the department said. When they arrived, several suspects fled the scene.

“The armored transport employees were rescued without injury by South Gate police officers,” police said.

The bank was closed Sunday, police added.

A witness told KTLA he had exited a nearby coffee shop when the attempted robbery happened and saw three men get out of a white Nissan and approach two armored car employees who appeared to be refilling ATMs with money, the witness told the station. The robbers then took the guards back to the armored truck. Police sirens appeared to stop the robbery.

Police later arrested two suspects, NBC4 reported. One other suspect remained at large this evening, the station said.

Anyone with information on this attempted robbery was asked to call South Gate police at 323-563-5436. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
