A potential crime scene in Santa Ana was cleared Monday when bones found in the 600 block of Broadway were determined to be from an animal, not a human as first suspected.

The bones were found Sunday at a fourplex, where workers were repairing a water leak, said Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna. Police called the coroner’s office, and an investigator from that office initially said they appeared to be human, he said, “so we froze the scene until homicide and an anthropologist from the coroner’s office could come out” Monday morning.

Police removed more tiles to gain further access, “and once they did (the anthropologist) said they were of a large animal, and we cleared the scene,” Bertagna said.
