A 40-foot boat was taking on water at Berth 204 at a Wilmington marina and marine units from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the emergency, a fire department spokeswoman said.

The call about the sinking boat came in at 7:34 p.m., said fire department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart.

Marine units put a siphon ejector in place which began removing water from the vessel, Stewart said. This action increased the boat’s buoyancy.

Firefighters also located one leak and were working to see if there were more leaks, Stewart continued. The marine units plugged the leak and stopped the boat from taking on water.

A dive team will conduct a final external evaluation of the boat, she added. Two LAFD boats will remain on the scene while other resources are released.

The owner of the vessel is not at the scene, Stewart said.
