An off-duty deputy Tuesday shot and wounded a 25-year-old man who allegedly broke into the lawman’s vehicle in Los Angeles, the sheriff’s department reported.
The shooting took place about 5 a.m. in the 8000 block of Regent Street, Deputy Trina Schrader said.
According to the department’s account of the shooting, the deputy spotted the alleged car thief inside his vehicle and tried to stop him, but the suspect got out of the vehicle and lunged at the deputy, who shot him once in the chest area.
Paramedics took the man, who was not immediately identified, to a hospital for treatment of his wound, which was non-life-threatening, Schrader said.
Anyone who witnessed what happened was asked to call the sheriff’s homicide bureau at 323-890-5500. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
