A suspected hit-and-run driver was in custody Thursday evening in connection with a fiery, three-vehicle crash on the westbound Pomona (60) Freeway in Whittier that left one person dead and another injured.
The crash occurred just west of the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway interchange about 10 p.m. and prompted the closure of the Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 lanes of the freeway until further notice, according to the California Highway Patrol.
At least one of the vehicles involved caught fire. The driver was able to escape the burning vehicle, but suffered multiple burns, the CHP said.
One person involved in the crash was declared dead on scene, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.
Details of the crash were not immediately available.
The hit-and-run suspect was taken into custody after running from the scene, ABC7 reported.
Traffic was being diverted off the freeway at Crossroads Parkway.
At least 50 vehicles stuck between Crossroads Parkway and the San Gabriel River Freeway were escorted off the Pomona Freeway by the CHP.
