The chase of a Mercedes-Benz stolen in East Los Angeles ended Friday evening when the suspect crashed into another vehicle and hit a pole in Chinatown, then got out of the car and ran from the scene and into a nearby apartment building.
The chase began around 10 p.m. in East Los Angeles and proceeded south on the Golden State (5) Freeway through Commerce, Santa Fe Springs and Norwalk, before returning to East Los Angeles, Boyle Heights and downtown Los Angeles before the suspect crashed near College Street and Broadway.
The driver ran from the vehicle and into an apartment building in the 900 block of Broadway as California Highway Patrol and Los Angeles Police Department officers swarmed the building, then turned their focus to the nearby Metro Gold Line Chinatown Station.
A person of interest was detained outside the station, but it was unclear if that person was the suspect, KCAL9 said.
It was not immediately known if anyone in the vehicle that was struck was injured.
