What was originally reported as a rubbish fire in Pacoima Friday evening turned out to be two separate grass fires that burned just over an acre of brush.

Firefighters responded to the 14000 block of Paxton Street, near the Golden State (5) Freeway, about 9 p.m. and found a quarter-acre of brush burning along the freeway, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Due to the location of the fire and the lack of a nearby water supply, additional firefighters and equipment, including water-dropping aircraft, were requested, Stewart said.

About 9:55 p.m., water drops were complete and firefighters stopped the progress of the fire. A total of 47 firefighters worked to mop up hot spots, she said.

Witness reports of a potential suspect lighting the fire resulted in a response from LAFD arson investigators, but there was no confirmation of those reports, Stewart said.

No injuries were reported.
