A 39-year-old man described by police as likely homeless was arrested early Tuesday for allegedly causing a deadly hit-and-run crash in the Echo Park area of Los Angeles in a car reported stolen.

Ilya Foks was arrested about 1:30 a.m. in the 8300 block of North Sepulveda Boulevard, near Roscoe Boulevard, in Los Angeles’ North Hills neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley, according to the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Traffic Division.

Foks was allegedly driving a stolen 2019 BMW M4 westbound on Sunset Boulevard near Douglas Street and Dodger Stadium about 7:45 a.m. Thursday when he veered into the eastbound lanes of Sunset Boulevard and crashed head-on into a 2004 Toyota Corolla, then fled on foot without rendering aid, police said.

Paramedics took the driver of the Toyota to a hospital, where she died from her injuries. She was identified as 61-year-old Rosa Garcia of Los Angeles, according to police.

The BMW was reported stolen, Sgt. D. Steussie of the LAPD’s Central Traffic Division said. Investigators were able to identify the suspect because he left his wallet and driver’s license behind, Steussie said.

Foks was booked for vehicular manslaughter and is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center on $50,000 bail, according to police.
