A father of four was killed Thursday in a shooting near his residence in Artesia, and authorities sought public help to solve the crime.

The man died at the scene about 2:30 a.m. in the 11800 block of 168th Street, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Family members identified him to reporters as 34-year-old Carlos Martinez. The coroner’s office was withholding his name, pending formal notification of relatives.

No description was available of the suspect or suspects, who remained at large.

“After school, I … could see him, but I can’t do that anymore,” his daughter, Delilah Alvarado, told ABC7.

Relatives told KTLA5 that Martinez grew up in the area but had recently fallen on difficult financial times, and he was performing odd jobs in the area. A family member told the station Martinez had gone to a nearby gas station to earn money by washing windows.

Delilah told the station her father was always generous, even when he didn’t have much money.

“Even though he only had a little, he still gave it to me,” she said.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
