Authorities Tuesday were seeking to identify whoever shot two men, one fatally, during an attack in Good Hope.

Faustino Mayares, 30, died at the scene of the shooting, which occurred about 3:50 p.m. Sunday at a property in the area of Marie Street and Mountain Avenue, southwest of Perris, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Sgt. Steve Brosche said deputies were called to the location to investigate reports of a shooting and found Mayares dead and the other man, whose name was withheld, suffering from a bullet wound.

The surviving victim was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley and is expected to recover, Brosche said.

He did not provide a possible motive for the shooting, or the number of assailants involved.

Good Hope is one of a number of unincorporated communities in the southwest county region where illegal marijuana cultivation is common. However, is was not immediately known whether the attack was drug-related.

Anyone with information was urged to contact the sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit at 951-955-2777.
