A man attempting to cross some railroad tracks was struck and killed by an oncoming Amtrak train in Oceanside, a sheriff’s sergeant said Sunday.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, said Sgt. Jason Burk of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

As a southbound Amtrak train going approximately 55 mph neared the 200 block of Surfrider Way, the victim ducked under the pedestrian crossing guard and attempt to run across the track, Burk said.

“The train sounded its warning horn to alert pedestrian traffic, but the male appeared to struggle crossing the tracks,” he said. “The train was unfortunately unable to stop before fatally striking the male.”

Deputies were dispatched to the scene a little before 11:20 p.m. Saturday, Burk said.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department asked anyone with information regarding the death to call them at 858-565-5200.
