A driver who slammed his sedan into a light pole early Sunday, killing his passenger, is suspected of drunk driving, police said.
The crash was reported at 4:18 a.m. at the intersection of Pachappa Drive and Jurupa Avenue, according to Riverside City Police Sgt. Matt Lewis.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the 21-year-old driver of a 1999 Infiniti G20 was heading east on Jurupa Avenue and lost control of the car on a curve at Pachappa Drive, Lewis said.
The car then hit a stop sign and a light pole, he said.
The passenger in the vehicle, who was not publicly identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The driver showed objective symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol,” Lewis said.
The driver, a Riverside man who was not named, was treated for his injuries and booked into county jail.
