Authorities Wednesday identified two drivers who were killed, along with a passenger, in a street racing crash in the Hancock Park area.
The crash was reported about 2 a.m. Monday at Highland and Melrose avenues, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Nathaniel Joseph, 28, and Keante Hoyett, 27, died at the scene, according to the coroner’s office. A man about 30, who was riding in one car, died at a hospital. His name was withheld, pending notification of next of kin. A female passenger in the other car was treated for an injury described as non-life-threatening.
LAPD Cmdr. Marc Reina said the motorists were racing one another.
“3 people lost their lives all because of street racing,” Reina wrote in a Twitter post that morning. “The families and friends of those who died will be impacted forever. Obey the rules of the road. Any deviation is just not worth it.”
LAPD Detective James Dickson of the West Traffic Division said the BMW sedans were southbound on Highland Avenue, south of Melrose Avenue, when they collided and slammed into palm trees.
Anyone with information on the crash was urged to call detectives at 213-473-0234 or 213-473-0222; 877-LAPD-24-7; or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
