A convicted felon accused of shooting a man and trying to shoot another during a gang-related confrontation in Hemet made his initial court appearance Friday on attempted murder and other charges.
Jordan Owen Marzette, 25, of Las Vegas was arrested last Friday following an investigation by the Riverside County Gang Task Force.
Along with attempted murder count, Marzette is charged with firearm assault, criminal street gang activity, being a convicted felon in possession of a gun and a sentence-enhancing great bodily injury allegation.
The defendant appeared before Superior Court Judge Timothy Hollenhorst, who appointed him a public defender and scheduled his arraignment for May 7 at the Banning Justice Center, which is currently closed to the public and only conducting urgent hearings while complying with statewide coronavirus emergency containment measures.
According to Hemet police Sgt. Bob Nishida, the alleged attack happened on the night of March 12 in the 1200 block of West Florida Avenue.
Nishida alleged that the defendant, a documented gang member, targeted a man identified in court documents only as “J.M.,” as well as another unidentified man who was with the victim.
During the street encounter, Marzette allegedly pulled a handgun and fired several shots, one of which struck J.M., while the other victim escaped injury, according to the sergeant.
He alleged that the defendant immediately fled the scene. J.M. was treated at an Inland Empire trauma center and has since recovered from his wound.
Task force detectives soon developed leads pointing to Marzette as the alleged gunman, and a warrant was issued for his arrest, Nishida said, adding that the convicted felon was taken into custody without incident on Day Street in Moreno Valley.
According to court records, Marzette, who is being held without bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta, has prior convictions for first-degree burglary, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and parole violations.
