A stretch of the eastbound Pomona (60) Freeway in Monterey Park was closed Tuesday morning as an investigation into a deadly California Highway Patrol officer-involved shooting was underway.
The shooting occurred about 8:20 p.m. Monday on the eastbound Pomona (60) Freeway, near Garfield Avenue, according to CHP Officer Tony Polizzi.
Officers were helping Cal Trans with a project in the area at the time of the shooting.
“They initiated an enforcement stop,” CHP Capt. Salvador Suarez told reporters at the scene. “At some point during the enforcement stop an officer-involved shooting occurred with one individual.”
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, according to multiple broadcast reports.
It was unclear what led to the shooting.
All eastbound lanes of the freeway and the Nos. 1 and 2 westbound lanes were closed until further notice.
