A stretch of the eastbound Pomona (60) Freeway in Monterey Park was closed for several hours early Tuesday as an investigation was conducted into a deadly California Highway Patrol officer-involved shooting.
The shooting occurred about 8:20 p.m. Monday on the eastbound freeway near Garfield Avenue, according to CHP Officer Tony Polizzi.
Officers were helping Caltrans with a project in the area at the time of the shooting.
“They initiated an enforcement stop,” CHP Capt. Salvador Suarez told reporters at the scene. “At some point during the enforcement stop, an officer-involved shooting occurred with one individual.”
Other details of the shooting were not released.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP reported. Information on his identity was not immediately available.
The eastbound lanes of the freeway and the Nos. 1 and 2 westbound lanes were closed while an investigation was conducted. All roadways were cleared by about 5:45 a.m., the CHP reported.
