A man jumped from an overpass to his death in South Los Angeles Saturday evening after lighting his car on fire near the Harbor (110) Freeway.

The suicide happened around 9 p.m. after the man parked at a lot near the Slauson Avenue onramp, according to Sgt. Rick Rodgers, with the Los Angeles Police Department’s 77th Street Station.

“As far as I know, the whole car was engulfed in flames,” he said.

The man, whose identity was not immediately known, walked to the nearby overpass, which he scaled and from which he leapt and landed on Slauson, Rodgers said.

Multiple people witnessed the act, he said.

The Los Angeles Fire Department’s arson unit also responded to the incident, and firefighters tried to give the man CPR, he said.

He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
