American flags waved and salutes were given as the funeral procession for police detective Jon Jarema made its way through the streets of Newport Beach Monday.

The 36-year-old Newport Beach Police Department detective died Saturday at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian after a two-year battle with cancer, the department announced.

Jarema, a married man with twins at home, was a 12-year veteran of the Newport Beach police department, having served as a detective, patrol officer and SWAT team member.

“Above all else, Jon’s devotion to his colleagues, dedication to duty, and charismatic smile will always be remembered,” Newport Beach Chief of Police Jon T. Lewis said.

The 5 1/2-mile procession, with a hearse led by police motorcycles, started Monday morning at the hospital in Newport Beach and ended at Pacific View Mortuary and Memorial Park in Corona del Mar.
