Two women who were killed when an SUV crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed into a compact car in west Riverside were publicly identified Monday.
Sharlene Ayala, 19, and Patricia Romero, 63, both of Riverside, were fatally injured in the crash Friday on Central Avenue, near Montclair Drive.
Riverside police Sgt. Ryan Wilson said the 28-year-old driver of a newer model Jeep was going west on Central about 12:30 p.m. when the SUV drifted into opposing traffic lanes and directly into the path of the Toyota Corolla that Ayala was driving.
The two vehicles collided, killing the young woman instantly, according to Wilson. Romero was taken to Riverside Community Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries about an hour later.
The Jeep driver, whose name was wihheld, had minor injuries. He was not arrested, but Wilson said the investigation is ongoing.
