A man armed with an assault rifle and wearing military gear similar to a National Guard uniform was arrested on an assault weapon violation in the downtown Los Angeles area Tuesday.

A National Guard member alerted police after spotting the unfamiliar man dressed in combat attire near the intersection of First Street and Main Street, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison said.

Gregory Wong of Gardena, 31, was taken into custody by police at about 1:30 a.m., Madison said.

Wong, who had an assault rifle and a pistol, told police he was heading downtown to provide security for a friend’s establishment, Madison said.

He was taken into custody and charged with transportation of an assault weapon, according to Madison.

“While investigators are still looking into the incident, at this time it does not appear that Mr. Wong intended to harm anyone,” Madison said.
