Authorities Wednesday continued their efforts to find the killers of six men gunned down in apparently unrelated crimes over a six-day period ending Tuesday in the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Bureau jurisdiction.
The latest killing occurred about 5:20 a.m. Tuesday, when a man about 40 years old was shot in the 800 block of North Vermont Avenue and died at the scene, according to the LAPD. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives. No suspect information was available.
Tuesday’s killing came on the day the LAPD announced that homicides in the city during the week of May 31-June 6 had increased 250% over the previous week, and the number of people who were shot increased by 56% during the same period.
Police have released information about the other five unsolved homicides that occurred since Thursday in the Central Bureau. The names of four of the fatally wounded men were released by the coroner’s office. The name of the fifth was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.
About 10:10 p.m. Thursday, two men were standing on a sidewalk near Bunker Hill and Cesar Chavez avenues when one or more suspects fired at them from a car that sped off. Angel Gamboa, 27, who was homeless, died at a hospital. The other man was hospitalized in stable condition.
According to Fox11, the shooting occurred as the men were walking home from a protest in the downtown area that attracted thousands of demonstrators. However, police said the crime occurred in a relatively deserted area, and the shooting did not appear to be related to the protest.
About the same time Thursday, Antonio Gonzalez Jr., 24, of Los Angeles was shot in the 200 block of North Soto Street in Boyle Heights by a man who walked up to him and opened fire in an apparently gang-related attack. Gonzalez died at the scene.
About 8:35 p.m. Friday, a man was wounded at East 51st Street and Avalon Boulevard in a drive-by shooting and died at a hospital. The man’s name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.
About 4:30 p.m. Saturday, David Salinas, 19, was shot in the 4300 block of Normal Avenue in the east Hollywood area. Salinas, whose city of residence was not known, died at the scene.
And about 1:10 a.m. Sunday, Maynor Aguirre, 34, of Los Angeles, was gunned down by a suspect during a house party in the 3800 block of Woodlawn Avenue, and died at a hospital.
Anyone with information on any of the shootings was urged to call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS, or 877-LAPD-247.
