An armed carjacking suspect was hospitalized Saturday morning with at least one gunshot wound suffered in a shootout with authorities in Palmdale and two other armed suspects were in custody.

The shooting occurred in the area of 20th Street East and Palmdale Boulevard at 10 p.m. Friday after a high-speed chase along the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway from Agua Dulce to Palmdale, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Detectives have learned that the three suspects were involved in an armed carjacking in South Gate earlier Friday. The vehicle was equipped with tracking software and the company contacted the California Highway Patrol, which spotted the vehicle on the Antelope Valley Freeway, north of the Golden State (5) Freeway, the department said.

As the vehicle entered the Agua Dulce area, the CHP requested the help of deputies from the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station and initiated a pursuit northbound on the freeway at high rates of speed, the LASD said.

The suspects exited at Palmdale Boulevard and continued eastbound to 20th Street East at which time all three suspects got out of the car armed. One suspect holding a shotgun immediately surrendered, but the two other, both armed with guns, opened fire on deputies and officers, firing multiple rounds at them, the department said.

Authorities returned fire, striking one suspect several times. The suspect was taken to a hospital in unknown condition, the LASD said.

The third suspect surrendered without being injured and was arrested.

A shotgun and two guns were recovered at the scene.

No deputies or CHP officers were injured.
