A man was in custody Friday for allegedly firing shots at Los Angeles police officers, who were not injured.
Quamontae Smith, 25, was arrested about 7:30 a.m. Thursday and booked on suspicion of attempted murder, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Officers had gone to 111th Street and Towne Avenue a short time earlier on a report of an assault with a deadly weapon, the LAPD reported.
“Officers observed possible suspects … and gave chase on foot,” LAPD Officer Drake Madison said in a statement. “At least one of the suspects shot at the officers while in foot pursuit. Officers did not return fire. Fortunately, neither of the officers were struck by gunfire.”
The officers established a perimeter and detained several suspects who were identified to have been involved in the initial assault incident, Madison said.
An AR-15 type rifle was recovered from the crime scene, along with ballistic evidence indicating that a shooting had occurred, Madison said.
“One of the suspects detained was identified as being the suspect who fired a weapon at pursuing officers,” Madison said. “That suspect was arrested and booked for attempted murder.”
