Three or four men vandalized the Mount Rubidoux cross in downtown Riverside with red spray paint and an axe, authorities said Saturday.

The vandalism to the cross, atop Mount Rubidoux in the 4700 block of Mount Rubidoux Drive was reported just after 9 p.m. Friday, according to Riverside police Officer Ryan J. Railsback.

“The damage they caused consisted of graffiti in red spray paint and a portion of the outer shell was broken near its base,” Railsback said.

A helicopter search of the area did not yield suspects, believed to be in their 20s, because “they fled down the opposite side of the mountain prior and were possibly seen leaving in a light-colored sedan,” he said.

Detectives were investigating, Railsback said. Anyone with information was asked to call the Riverside police Property Crimes Unit at 951-353-7100.
