A 78-year-old man struck by a truck in Corona positioned himself near the front of the big rig just before it rolled over him, authorities said Monday.

Kenneth Clingman of Corona was fatally injured about 5:30 p.m. Friday in the 23000 block Temescal Canyon Road, just east of Interstate 15.

California Highway Patrol Officer Juan Quintero said a 63-year-old Mississippi man parked his tractor-trailer in a dirt lot alongside Temescal Canyon for a rest, and a short time later, Clingman pulled into the same lot, parking his Toyota Tacoma pickup adjacent to the passenger side of the semi.

The victim got of out his vehicle and then stood near the right front side of the big rig, below where the trucker could see him, according to Quintero.

“(The driver) was unaware of the man’s location when he began to drive away,” the officer said. “His rig and trailer ran over the victim, and in the process, produced fatal injuries.”

The trucker stopped when he realized he had run over Clingman. Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived within minutes and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

The fatality remains under investigation, and anyone with information was asked to contact the CHP’s Riverside office at 951-637-8000.
