A 27-year-old Santa Ana convicted felon was arrested Thursday on suspicion of a hit-and-run accident that killed a pregnant woman’s 8-month-old fetus.
Joel Giovanni Andalon was arrested and booked Thursday afternoon and was being held in Santa Ana’s jail on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run, according to Santa Ana Police Department Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.
Police also released video of the crash in the hopes that investigators can interview the driver of a van that passed by the crash because they think he or she may have witnessed the collision, Bertagna said.
Anyone who may have seen the crash is asked to call 714-245-8208 or 714-245-8200.
The crash occurred about 9:46 a.m. Friday at First and Lacy streets, Bertagna said.
Three people were injured in the two-car collision, Bertagna said. The pregnant woman, a friend of the suspect’s who was in Andalon’s car, had to undergo emergency surgery when the fetus was pronounced dead, Bertagna said.
Andalon crashed into a car turning left onto Lacy Street, Bertagna said. Andalon’s car was speeding when it slammed into the other car, Bertagna said.
Andalon is accused of getting out of the car and running away.
Andalon pleaded guilty March 29, 2019 to leading police on a chase and was sentenced to two years in prison.
