Flags at the state Capitol will be flown at half-staff through sunset Thursday in honor of a Los Angeles Police Department senior detention officer who died from the coronavirus.

Erica McAdoo, 39, who was assigned to the Custody Services Division, died late Friday from complications related to the coronavirus, department officials said. She is believed to be the first LAPD officer to die after contracting COVID-19.

As of Monday, there were 254 LAPD employees at home after having been exposed to or testing positive for COVID-19, while another 136 have returned to work.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement that he and his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom “were extremely saddened to learn of the death of Senior Detention Officer Erica McAdoo, who lost her courageous fight with COVID-19. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and her LAPD colleagues as they mourn her untimely passing.”

McAdoo is survived by her mother, Donna Royston.
