Two people were killed Monday in a two-vehicle collision that sparked a fire in Perris.

The crash happened about 11:45 a.m. at the intersection of Harley Knox Boulevard and Patterson Avenue, just east of Interstate 215, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The circumstances behind the collision were not immediately clear, but according to reports from the scene, one of the vehicles impacted the other at high speed.

Firefighters reached the location within a few minutes and found one motorist dead, and another occupant of the vehicle trapped, as well as flames in the engine block.

The trapped victim was extricated and pronounced dead at the scene 10 minutes later.

The fire was contained by noon and did not spread to surrounding vegetation, according to officials.

Witnesses said an occupant of one of the vehicles fled after the crash, but that could not be immediately confirmed.

Sheriff’s deputies were investigating.
