A motorist was injured Friday when his vehicle overturned and smashed into a fire hydrant in Jurupa Valley, leaving him trapped and causing a water spill.

The crash happened about 11 a.m. at the intersection of Morton Avenue and Pedley Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Sheriff’s deputies were the first to reach the location and found the driver pinned inside the sedan as water pooled in the roadway around him, according to reports from the scene.

Several engine crews arrived roughly 15 minutes later and initiated an extrication operation. The victim was freed from the vehicle about 11:30 a.m. and taken to Riverside Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

A technician from the Jurupa Community Services District was summoned to shut off the water and assess damage to the hydrant.

Deputies were investigating the cause of the crash.
