A nearly 30-acre brush fire Thursday afternoon in Azusa prompted evacuations for the Mountain Cove community.

The fire was reported about 2:45 p.m. near North San Gabriel Canyon Road and North Ranch Road, according to the Azusa Police Department and the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The blaze was initially burning uphill in medium to heavy brush, and by 3:10 p.m., residents of the Mountain Cove were “asked to evacuate the neighborhood immediately,” according to the Azusa Police Department, which said the fire was “actively threatening” the community.

By 3:30 p.m., the fire was burning between 25 and 30 acres, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department had called in a second-alarm response.
