A hiker who became stranded on a trail in the Cleveland National Forest west of Lake Elsinore was the focus of an air and ground rescue operation Friday.
The trekker was reported down about 4 p.m. near Tenaja Falls, south of the Ortega (74) Highway, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency said five engine crews were sent to the area to search for the victim, along with an Orange County Fire & Rescue helicopter crew.
Another hiker encountered the victim suffering from an unspecified injury and, after reaching the trailhead, drove to a county fire station to report where the victim was and his need for medical attention, according to officials.
Temperatures were in excess of 100 degrees in the area.
As of 5 p.m., firefighters had still not located the victim and were using off-road vehicles to look for him, while coordinating with the chopper crew, according to reports from the scene.
