A 24-year-old motorist in Santa Ana was fatally wounded while en route to visit family and friends, a police sergeant said Saturday.

The motorist, Francisco Nunez of Costa Mesa, and his female passenger were in the 2100 block of West Brownwood Avenue on Thursday night when an unknown person shot at their vehicle, Santa Ana Police Sgt. Steve Pena said.

Nunez was struck in the head and the vehicle crashed into a parked car. The female passenger, who suffered a minor head injury from the crash, managed to take control of the vehicle and drive to a gas station to summon help, Pena said.

Officers responded to the gas station, located at 530 N. Brookhurst St., just before 11 p.m. after the female passenger, covered in blood, asked the clerk to call 911.

Officers found Nunez suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Paramedics rushed him to an area hospital, where he later died.

No suspects have been arrested or identified.

Anyone with information was urged to call 855-TIP-OCCS or visit www.occrimestoppers.org. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
