Authorities Tuesday identified a 22-month-old boy who was fatally injured by a car service vehicle outside his home in North Long Beach over the weekend.
Mason Hernandez Ruiz was injured about 8 p.m. Saturday near Atlantic Avenue and Artesia Boulevard and died at a hospital, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office and the Long Beach Police Department.
“It appears it was a tragic accident at this point,” LBPD Lt. Megan Zabel said.
The driver, whose name was not released, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, Zabel said.
According to police, the toddler and his father had just been dropped off at their home by the car service driver when the father became momentarily distracted and the boy ran in front of the vehicle.
“The driver then pulled away from the curb, failing to see the juvenile on front of the vehicle, and subsequently striking him with a front tire,” a police statement said.
Anyone with more information on the case was urged to call detectives at 562-570-7132, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
