A 21-year-old driver suspected of driving drunk has been arrested in connection with a single-vehicle crash in Huntington Beach Sunday that killed his passenger, a 25-year-old man, police said.

The driver, Miguel Guzman of Riverside, suffered minor injuries, according to Huntington Beach Police Sgt. Joshua Page.

Officers dispatched at about 12:50 a.m. to Springdale Street and McFadden Avenue, in response to an initial call of a hit-and-run crash, found Guzman and his passenger trapped inside a vehicle, Page said.

“Officers quickly determined no hit and run had occurred and it was a solo-vehicle collision,” he said.

Both men had to be extricated from the vehicle. Paramedics rushed them to UCI Medical Center, where Guzman’s passenger, a resident of Moreno Valley, later died from his injuries, he said.

Guzman was subsequently arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

Huntington Beach police traffic investigators urged anyone with information regarding the crash to call them at 714-536-5670.
