A homeless man was struck and killed Monday by a hit-and-run driver in Hemet, and police sought the public’s help to find the suspect.

Landis Gibbs, 31, was either walking along the westbound shoulder of Domenigoni Parkway near Rarren Road, or in lanes, when he was hit about 2:30 a.m., according to Hemet police Lt. Eric Dickson.

The driver accelerated away from the location, and another motorist came upon Gibbs lying on the north shoulder of the four-lane corridor, Dickson said. The witness called 911, and paramedics arrived within a few minutes and pronounced Gibbs dead at the scene.

“All that is known about the suspect vehicle is that it was dark in color,” the lieutenant said.

Domenigoni was shut down between Warren and Sanderson Avenue for four hours while a preliminary investigation was conducted.

Anyone with information was encouraged to contact the police department at 951-765-2400.
