Gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI charges were filed Tuesday against a 21-year-old Riverside man accused in a weekend crash in Huntington Beach that killed his passenger.

Miguel Angel Guzman Jr. is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 11 on charges of gross vehicular while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury and driving under the influence of alcohol and drug while causing injury, all felonies, with sentencing enhancements for inflicting great bodily injury.

Rescue crews called at 12:50 a.m. Sunday to Springdale Street and McFadden Avenue had to extricate Guzman and 25-year-old Lance Jones of Moreno Valley from the wreckage of the defendant’s vehicle, which slammed into a light pole, according to Huntington Beach police.

Jones died of his injuries at 5:21 a.m. Sunday at UC Irvine Medical Center.
